Because of COVID-19, we have had to suspend our 2020 on-the-ground programs on Lesvos. As a result, we are not recruiting new volunteers at this time. Once it is safe to travel to Lesvos, we will continue our lessons in person.
However, we continue to expand our online tutoring program for refugees in Lesvos.
The Girls Empowerment Program, for unaccompanied minor girls and adult women, creates a safe space for team outdoor activities with an emphasis on learning important life skills.
Through team activities, our goal is to empower girls and women by building self-confidence, developing teamwork and leadership skills, and promoting good health.
SWIMMING LESSONS
Swimming lessons are given in the summer and led by U.S. Masters Swimmer and team member Michele Cobble with a volunteer team of swim instructors.
All the girls and women we work with have crossed the sea in inadequate boats, on the last leg of a journey that requires great bravery. Their first lesson in the sea is often challenging, but they feel supported by their instructors and each other and they ultimately succeed.
The patience and compassion of Michele and other volunteers are helping young women build their inner strength and self-confidence as they develop their swimming skills and feel pride in their achievements.
Would you like to volunteer to assist in our next swim program in the summer of 2021?

BIKE RIDING LESSONS
After lessons in a safe and secure environment, girls are able to experience the thrill and freedom of riding bicycles.
These sensations are felt even more by some of the girls who are from countries where it is against the law for girls and women to ride bicycles.
